Prayer~~From the Womb to Heaven

Precious Heavenly Father, I praise You this day and every day for being there with me all the way from the time You knitted me together in my mother's womb till now as You chase me into eternity. Psalm 22:10

Thank you Lord for all that You have done for me. You have shaped me through hard times. Comforted me when I felt all alone. Healed my wounded heart multiple times. Gave me directions when I was lost. Disciplined me when I got out of hand. Hugged me when I needed held. You have listened to my cries and heard my many prayers. You have given me Your strength when mine has failed me. You have surrounded me like a shield with Your grace and mercy.

All I can say Lord is You have blessed me richly with Your blessings such as the family I am surrounded by. I will always cherish the memories with our daughter and the grandchildren. Thank You for the gifts You have given me and Your love You have shown for me over the years.

I know You aren't finished with me yet or I would have already been gone. Help me to finish well the race You have marked out for me. Whether I can see the finish line or not ahead of me may I cross it glorifying You Lord.

Yo, God. Extra Weight

Therefore then, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses [who have borne testimony to the Truth], let us strip off and throw aside every encumbrance (unnecessary weight) and that sin which so readily (deftly and cleverly) clings to and entangles us, and let us run with patient endurance and steady and active persistence the appointed course of the race that is set before us, Hebrews 12:1 Amplified Bible
Once again it was time for my Yo, God class. Picking up the weights I needed I also found the scripture I wanted to use too. It was the one in Hebrews 12 about throwing off the extra weight that easily entangles us.

As I reached for my weights to lift for my exercise class throwing off extra weight sounded good. "Oh bother Karen" I thought to myself, 'you haven't even got started and you want to throw off the extra weight."

That thought interestingly enough led to another thought. It was obvious my Yo, God class was going to be a success today. My second meditation was the fact that we often find it easy to ditch extra weight physically in what we are holding on to but not spiritually.

As I went through class I began to try and figure out what extra weight I was holding on to. For some people it's anger, bitterness, unforgiveness, addiction to alcohol or drugs, or other things. We seem to clamp on to these things for all we are worth and refuse to let go long enough to deal with them.

That is not the way the Bible tells us to handle these things. It says that since we are surrounded by such a great crowd of witnesses we need to do our part. It says we need to, strip off and throw aside  every encumbrance or unnecessary weight. It also tells us to toss aside that sin that we get so easily entangled with.

Every unnecessary weight, every, not just some but every. We are to toss it aside so quickly it doesn't have a chance to slow us down. With that weight goes the sin that so easily entangles us. The anger that gets us in trouble. The drinking that causes us to hurt others. The bitterness that holds us back and the list goes on.

With our load lightened we are free to run that race God has set before us. Not the race we choose to run. The race to sin, to living for ourselves not caring about the course God wants us on but the race to be a part of the great cloud of witnesses for Jesus. The place where the swift are found in those un-encumbered by the world's extra weight.

There's no time to wait. Life is too short and eternity long to weigh ourselves down unnecessarily. Go for the swift. Go for the un-encumbered. Go for Jesus.

Yo, God. My Turn to Lift

As I prepared for my morning Yo, God class I began to warm up by slowly lifting my weights. First the right arm then the left, I slowly warmed up to the task at hand.
In the midst of my warm up the idea of the scripture I wanted to use came to mind. It was a scripture dear to my heart already which I used many times to get me through rough spots. It was Psalms 121:1-3 "I will lift up my eyes to the hills---from whence comes my help? My help comes from The Lord who made heaven and earth. He will not allow your foot to be moved; He who keeps you will not slumber."

As I lifted my weights ever so slowly at first I thought of lifting my eyes to the hills. In the area where I live we are surrounded by gorgeous mountain ranges. Big ones, small ones, some that are snow-capped and others that are not. It's not the mountains themselves that I look to but the one who created them. As I look to them I am reminded of what we both have in common. It is the fact we share the same creator.

It is to our Creator we lift our eyes. At first, like the weights in my hand we might start out slow but with time we become much faster. The more we practice the better we become at lifting our eyes to God as we come to realize He is our helper. A helper who never slumbers nor sleeps.

As with the weights in our hands, we are lifting, are there to help us so is God spiritually. The thing about the two of them is the fact that some lifting is required. The weights will do us no good if we don't lift them frequently. The same with our eyes. If we don't frequently lift them to God and acknowledge who God is, our helper, it does us no good.

Too often we are the ones who are at slumber or rest not God. We slack off on our task at hand which is to lift our eyes to God. We get busy lifting our eyes to a new car, a movie we love to watch, money, drugs, alcohol, or other false idols and it drives us away from where we need to be.

We fail to acknowledge it is often our turn to lift that which does us the most good and that's our eyes. The first thing in good communication is eye contact. Many of us have heard it from our parents when they were trying to talk to us or scold us saying, "look me in the eye when I am talking to you."

This is all God is asking of us. To look Him in the eye. We don't need the view of the snow or the green and brown terrain. We need to look at the Creator of this wondrous artwork, God himself.

Praise be to the one who never sleeps. Praise be to He who is the Creator of all.

Love you God and thanks for never slumbering. Indeed it is my turn to lift.

Yo, God~~~Renew Your Strength and Soar like an Eagle

But those who wait for The Lord, who expect, look for, and hope in Him shall change and renew their strength and power; they shall lift their wings and mount up close to God as eagles mount up to the sun; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint; or become tired. Isaiah 40:31

As I reached for my weights this morning to start my daily weight loss class I call "Yo, God" my imagination already was ahead of me. Instantly I knew what scripture I wanted to meditate on while working out. Feeling great from the refreshing Christmas gathering with my family there were new smiles on my face and heart that weren't there before.

Before meeting with my family I felt like the poem that stated "how do I know my youth has been spent because my get up and go has got up and went."  Mine was more like this:

" How do I know that my strength has been spent.
Because my get up and go has got up and went.
With my spirit flat on the floor and my smile upside down
I wondered how in the world was I going to get around.
My cancer had me dragging; life's stress had its toil,
was there really something I could do to get out of this hole?
Then I spent time in the scripture and exchange laughter with others,
suddenly what was flat was no longer smothered.
It's true what God says about renewing your strength,
next time I will mount up like an eagle in a blink.
It may take me back to the scriptures, to my family galore
but one thing I know I won't leave my spirit at the door.
God is my strength its not the weights in my hands
but its His love and His presence that gives me my stand.
Now with my spirit inflated again to be worn,
my upturned smile returns to me more.
Come fly with me eagles, come fly with me now.
Lets renew our strength in God and get our feet off the ground.
Life's too short to be a chicken unable to fly.
Lets fly away, fly away, fly away all.

Mount up fellow eagles.

"Yo, God here comes Your convocation of eagles."

Yo, God~~~~~Let my Voice be Heard

I will wash my hands in innocence and go about Your altar, O Lord. That I may make the voice of thanksgiving heard and may tell of all Your wondrous works. Lord, I love the habitation of Your house, and the place where Your glory dwells. Psalm 26:6-8

On Thanksgiving day before getting into the fast lane of preparing a meal, shopping for bargains, and dealing with unnecessary drama I grab for my weights. As I do that my heart grabs for a scripture to hold on to. The one I found today was in the Psalm where so many blessings and truths dwell.

The first order of business I am told to take care of is to wash my hands in innocence. In other words I need to cleanse myself. The soap and water I have to use is Jesus and the cleansing He brought upon the cross. I don't need to dirty my hands nor my soul of the things of the earth. We get dirty enough as it is. Where I belong is going about my Heavenly Father's throne or altar concentrating and meditating on the things above.

Too often the things of this world get in the way of that and we lose site of what is really important. Such as the making of the voice of thanksgiving to be heard by telling of God's wondrous works and meditating on it. Unfortunately more frequently than not we like to let our voice be heard regarding the person we don't like, how the church music is too loud, or the font on the music sheets are too small.

Our mediation is all wrong. I have a choice to dwell on the weights I am lifting in my hands or the wondrous works of God. Is it going to be my voice of grumbling people hear or the voice of thanksgiving. Which is it going to be depends on the content of my heart and the choices I make in my spirit.

Today I want my voice to be heard. The voice of thanksgiving for God's wondrous works. Just because I have cancer doesn't mean I can't be thankful.
There's more cleansing and healing in being thankful than complaining and living off the negative side of life's coin.

I love You, Lord. Thanks for all Your wondrous works. Including those you have done for me thru Your grace and mercy. Equipping me for each of life's journeys I have traveled thru with Your strength and guidance.

Happy Thanksgiving. Let my voice be heard.

Yo, God~~~Choosing our steps

"Righteousness will go before Him. And shall make His footsteps our pathway."
Psalms 85:13

As I rose before the morning sun it was time to look into my Bible to find a scripture to take with me to my morning "yo, God" class. A scripture to meditate on to bring strength and fitness to my spiritual body. The scripture that caught my attention was found in Psalms 85:13.

What stood out the most to me was the fact that God's footsteps shall be our pathway. Being a person who has to choose my steps carefully because of my bone cancer pathways are important. The smoother and flatter the better, even then I carefully make sure I am not going to step wrong causing myself to fall.

Spiritually is no different. The smoother and flatter the better although that's not always the case. It's great that God paves the road ahead of us with His footsteps. His righteousness that goes before Him is the paving material that is laid down to establish our pathway.

As I lift my weights this morning I can't help but thank The Lord for what He has done for me. It indeed helps to know I don't have to blaze my own trails. I may need to lift my own weight temporarily but even that spiritually is not done alone.

What I need to meditate on this morning is choosing my steps carefully on a path already paved for me. Looking close to where I am going that I may not fall. It doesn't matter how smooth or flat the surface I could still fall but the biggest issue is if I stay down or gracefully arise again to walk with the Lord in His footsteps. The choice is mine. The pathway is His.

Yo,God How long?

Today as I reached out to pick up my weights for my morning Yo, God class I noticed myself choosing my lighter weights. "Hum' I thought to myself wouldn't it be wonderful to get to choose what size of weight for the day would be on my heart.

If that were the case my choice would be a lot smaller than the huge burden plaguing my heart now. Our only transportation had broken down, the dog had taken ill, trouble mounting at work, financial difficulties, marital tensions and so much more were all a part of the weight I was feeling.

The scripture I kept wanting to meditate on was the one in Psalm 6:3 that said "my soul is greatly troubled, how long?" How long, how long, how long kept echoing in my heart like a scratched record that wouldn't quit playing the same thing over and over again. As was the remedy for the record player my soul needed a good bump to get it out of that stuck position so it could go beyond that one area.

Sure enough after a good bump my spirit was able to land on the scripture in the same chapter that made sense to dwell upon. Psalm 6:8,9 that talked about how The Lord has heard the voice of our weeping, He hears our supplication, and He will receive our prayer.

How long? Who knows. What matters is that the Lord hears us and receives our prayers. The rest lies in faith and trust in Him. The road toward anything always seems the longest. We'd rather be on the return portion where it goes by quickly and we're done.

If you think about it often the amount of weight on our heart is chosen by us. We may not be able to choose where the weight came from. The circumstances or the reasons but we can choose our weight by how much we are going to trust in Jesus. Unloading on Jesus lightens the load. Knowing He hears and receives our prayers lightens the load too.

We need to take control over that which we have control over, our faith and trust and leave the 'how long's' to Jesus.

Yo, God ~~~~Facing instead of flinching

1 Sam 17:41-48 paraphrase: Goliath walks out toward David and shouts at him. David replies, "you come with swords and weapons I come to you in the name of The Lord. He will conquer you today and everyone will know God doesn't need weapons to rescue His people." Then David quickly ran out to meet Goliath.

As I began my morning exercise my mediation was on the story of David and Goliath. I bet David never had to lift weights, I thought to myself. Instantly putting a damper on my pity party I started to think about what David encountered when he faced his giant.

David in this story had a chance to face Goliath or flinch. He could have cowered back with everyone else but he didn't.  He shouted back at Goliath in the name of The Lord, declaring The Lord. Next thing he does is quickly run out to meet Goliath.

With each pull at my muscles and the dumbbells I ask God for the strength to be like David who faced his giant instead of flinch.

Yo, God~~ Follow instead of Stumble

Jesus said to the people, "I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won't be stumbling through the darkness, because you will have light that leads to life." John 8:12 NLB

As I sit down to meditate on God's word and lift up my weights to stretch my arms I think of the weight on my heart. Whether the dumbbells in my hands are hard or not to lift often depends on yesterday's activities or the lack there of.

Same with the weight on my heart trying to deal with my cancer. Whether its hard or not to lift depends on yesterday's activities of faith and trust in God. I am promised in God's word that if I follow Him as my guiding light I will not stumble thru the darkness.

Wow, how is that possible when trying to fight my cancer seems so dark? Every corner has a hidden surprise. Every path seems to be full of dark shadows in between some reflection of light. It's like traveling down a road lined with trees casting their shadows on what should be a well lite trail.

As I stretched out my arms once again with the dumbbells my heart evidently stretched out as well as I thought of something. God's promise in the Scripture for today isn't well lit, pain free, no stumbling, or smooth paths. His promise is in the darkness we will not stumble if we follow Him.

It is through the darkness we are led if we are willing to follow Him.  If I find myself tripping I am no different than Peter who was tripping over the waves when he took his eyes off of Jesus on the water.

Its up to us whether we want to be a Peter or not. As for me, in the darkness I will not stumble because I will follow the one true light that can lead me through it. Together Jesus and I will journey thru my cancer. Him in the lead as always lighting the path before me as I follow.

To, God

Today for our "Yo, God" class the scripture God lead me to meditate on is:

But as for me, I will come into Your house in the multitude of Your mercy; in fear of You I will worship toward Your holy temple. Lead me, O Lord, in Your righteousness because of my enemies; Make Your way straight before my face. Psalm 5:7,8

In this scripture the phrase, 'but as for me,' shows a lot of strength. It is someone who knows where they want to go and are in no need of following a crowd to get there. Boldly you can hear them state that in spite of what others were doing they chose for themselves to come into God's house of mercy to worship Him out of reverence fear and respect.

As I lift each weight I hold in my hands and slowly stretch out my arms I think to myself, "Wow! I can't think of a better place to pick than to be in God's house of the multitude of His mercy." In the world we live in we could all use a multitude of mercy. However, the thing to meditate on right now as we stretch our heart as well as our muscles is to think about what he did once in the house of mercy.

Instead of entering grumbling and complaining he came to worship. This is where we go wrong. We think because life is dragging us thru all sorts of pain that we have the right to come complaining instead of worshipping. Wrong indeed. Even in the midst of pain there needs to be worship.

We need to focus on what God is capable of doing instead of what life has done to us. Once we worship the next step is to surrender our lives to The Lord asking for Him to do the leading.

Leading in His righteousness not our emotions or complaints. Leading in a way strait before our face that we can see to follow. As I was about to set down my dumbbells and call it a good mediation and exercise session something caught my attention.

The scripture read I will come "in" the house of The Lord "in" the multitude of God's mercy. In God's mercy we enter. We don't enter on our own.

Yo, God ~~~Protective Custody

Yo, God this morning as I reach for my Bible and weights my emotional and spiritual heart seemed to fall on the same thought about protective custody. Looking up Psalm 34:7 I read, "The angel of The Lord encamps all around those who fear Him, and delivers them."

At the lifting of each weight it felt good to think about such a promise in the Bible. The more I meditated on it the more it seemed to lift the burdens that were weighing down my heart. Suddenly in the midst of lifting each arm high above my head I realized I was fearing the wrong thing.

The promise I just read was for those who fear God not for those afraid of others. The thought that God was willing to take the time to encamp around me made me realize I needed to do my part and stay still and accept that protection.

Getting all upset over my burdens or the weights on my heart from life and throwing them around didn't make sense. I needed to treat them as I did the dumbbell weights in my hands and slowly move them up to The Lord to release them into His care. His protective custody.

The place of comfort. The environment of peace. Yo, God you're the best. Thank you for all you do.

Yo God, Lifter of My Head

God is a shield around me, the lifter of my head Ps 3:3

As I get out my weights to lift this morning I think of the scripture from Ps 3:3 where it tells me God is a shield around me, the lifter of my head. As I got started in my exercises the more I tried to lift the weights in my hands the repetition of doing it over and over made the weight even heavier.

Soon what started out at a pretty good speed has slowed down to a great effort to get them even two inches into the air. It was here as I tried my best to get the weights up as high as possible that made me think of God being the lifter of my head.

I began to wonder for the many times my head was in need of lifting if God ever got tired and worn out. Finding Himself totally fatigued to the point He just couldn’t lift it any higher than two inches from its down position. Suddenly with that last thought a smile came upon not only my face but my heart as well. Instantly I knew what I had just described were my efforts to raise my chin not God’s.

It doesn’t matter how many times He has to do it, His arm will never grow weary, and the weight of our chin will never be too much for Him.

“Yo, God. I like that idea. As much as I would like to blame the fact I have too many chins to hold up there are never too many for You. You are a shield around me to protect and keep me safe from myself as well as Satan. Thank you for Your love and the strength You give me to go on. May You forever be the one who is the lifter of my head and the shield that will always surround me. I love you Lord.”

Yo, God Class

Class today leads us to pray without ceasing as we exercise our minds, spirit and body. Eventually the physical exercise may end but praying without ceasing must go on.

As we learn to pray we need to treat it as a new exercise. One we may only be able to do it for a moment or two at first like my elliptical exercise I do. However, with time and persistence I plan to last longer but it's going to take awhile. Same with prayer.

Therefore, let class begin as once more Yo, God leads us to pray without ceasing to:

•be thankful to God no matter what happens
•have the fruit of the spirit of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control,
•live and walk by the Spirit
•have the ability to bring out the best in people
•be cheerful no matter what
•not suppress the Spirit
•be steady and determined in my faith despite hard times
•have God make me fit for whatever He has called me to do
•live my life to honor God forever
•have a clean mind, holy meditation, and a controlled tongue
•know wisdom and instructions and perceive the words of understanding
•be wise enough to hear and increase my learning
•have a peace of mind and strengthened spirit

Yo God

Some of the best things to meditate on when we are exercising our body are things that will exercise our spiritual lives as well. The following are statements from the 16th and 17th century from the Puritans who were really in to giving God the glory and praise due His name. They were also good at self-reflection and taking at look at themselves and see what needed to be fixed, what was good, what could be added and so much more.

So think about these things as we reach out to say once more, "Yo, God....."

•Teach me to praise, adore, and magnify Thee with the music of Heaven and make me a perfume of praiseful gratitude to Thee.

•Help me walk the separated life with firm and brave steps and to wrestle successfully against weakness.

•Give me the power to live as Thy child in all my actions and to exercise sonship by conquering self.

•Lead me safely on to the eternal kingdom, not asking whether the road be rough or smooth.

Yo, God Class~~~~~~God is my hiding place

God is my hiding place, He will protect me from trouble and surround me with songs of deliverance Psalm 32:7 Today as I grabbed for my weights to do my daily exercises the scripture I brought with me to class was the one from Psalm 32:7. As I lifted my weights one by one I reflected on the fact that God was my hiding place where He protected me from trouble and surrounded me with songs of deliverance. With each bending of my elbows stretching out the weights in my hands I reflected on the fact that God wasn’t there to keep me away from trouble. He was there to protect me from the trouble I face. The fact that He was my hiding place wasn’t a place to keep from dealing with life. It was a place where it made it easier to deal with the things going on in my life. Truly what I learned in this minute meditation was something that was going to go with me throughout the day to help tone my life. Knowing I have a place of safety where rest and peace is found is wonderful. It was something far more of a blessing to reflect upon than the negative things in life that like to add only flab to your Christian body. “Yo, God’ Thanks for being my hiding place. My place where I can always dwell.’ I love you, Lord.”

Yo God

Recently when I was at a women's retreat speaking on my journey with stress seizures a lady talked to me about her Yoga class. She was real pleased with the results and she enjoyed the relaxing meditation time she got from it. After the retreat I got to thinking about it as well. One day as I sat at my desk I started thinking about the importance of meditation on God's scriptures. Since my cancer doctor is always asking me if I am exercising I began to wonder if I could put the two together.

It was here that I thought of the phrase "yo God." As I grabbed my five pound weights I started to stretch out my arms in various motions as I meditated on a scripture I pulled out of my Bible to feed upon. It was very relaxing to go slow in my arm movements as well as in my meditation of the scripture in order to benefit from both.

What started as a one time experiment has turned into a daily routine. One that I do daily and whenever I feel my spirit in the need of getting back on track. It has been a way to focus on what is important in order to escape the stress and strain of the world.

Doing these one minute mediations and muscle toning that both have lasting affects has been great. After all our minds were designed to meditate on things, why not make it something beneficial for both our spiritual and physical side of life.

Come with me as we attend our "Yo God" class and reap the benefits of what we are willing to sow.

Growing Beyond~~~~95 Days till Easter Days 85-87

Growing Beyond    Day 87              Jan 3, 2013       Man-Made Rules

On this day I need to concentrate on getting rid of all the man-made rules that hinder my success. Rules such as: 1) I need to eat when everyone else eats, 2) I need to clean my plate even though I’m already satisfied, 3) the clock tells me when to eat, and 4) food gives me comfort when I need it.

Truly when spiritual issues and sensual indulgence are not tackled or addressed and redirected using the good news of Jesus Christ, then all we have are man-made rules. It’s hard to understand how we will follow a man made rule in a heartbeat but ignore the rules set out by God.

Why is it we are so willing to self-destruct using man-made rules and ignore the things designed to give us life not take it away which are the rules of God. Too often people think the Bible is outdated that the rules shouldn’t apply to the current century. Well let me ask you, “How long ago did man make up the rule that if you murder someone you will be convicted and stand the possibility of being put to death yourself?” That is an old rule made in an earlier century therefore it should be considered to be outdated. Right? Wrong!

As much as we would like to believe that rules were meant to be broken they aren’t. They are there for a reason but we need to make sure we are following all the right rules when it comes to our eating habits or our spiritual lives. God’s way is better than any man-made rule that ever could have been designed. Therefore its up to us to stay away from the man-made rules that have only lead to our self-destruction and follow God’s design of eating right. Rules such as: 5) eating when you are hungry not when the clock says to; 4) eating till you are satisfied not until the plate is empty; 3) getting my comfort from God instead of chocolate covered donut I thought was my friend; and 2) Eating when its right for me not when its right for everyone who happens to be eating at the time.

The number one rule: 1) Allow God to rule in my life, to have control over me instead of food and my desire to eat it whenever I want.

Growing Beyond    Day 86     Jan 4, 2013                    Desire for Extra Food

Whether I want to admit it or not I need to get rid of my evil desire for extra food. No, evil is not too harsh of a word as it really does describe it well. Just because I love something I’m eating doesn’t mean I need to eat more of it than I should. When I allow food to call my name and eat beyond what my body needs that is, evil. It goes against God’s plan for me to wait for my body to call for food and tell me when it’s time to stop.

I won’t die if I pass the opportunity for a maple bar donut. The extra helping of scalloped potatoes I think I need really doesn’t do a thing for me except round my hips out a little more.

I need to live my life taking in the food my body needs, not the extra my mind wants.

Growing Beyond    Day 85   Jan 5, 2013              Self-Control and Self-Discipline

Ten days into my 95 days till Easter journey and I am now thinking of self-control. Duh! The whole journey is about self-control and self-discipline. It’s almost a test to see if the spirit of God is alive and strong in me. Or maybe what I should say is it’s a test to see if I am going to listen to the spirit of God in me to use His eating system designed in me from the moment of conception.

The extra rolls of fat on my belly, the added weight showing up on the scales shows just out of control I am when it comes to eating. My eating habits are at their worse and my body advertises that as I jiggle when I walk. I have no one else to blame but myself. McDonald’s is not to blame; it wasn’t Burger Kings fault I got fat. Dunkin Donuts had no clue of my intensions to over eat and carry with me on my hips the extra calories I consumed.

As much as we would like to blame everyone else, we are to blame. We are the ones who need to learn the dying art of self-control and self-discipline. This doesn’t apply to food only. It is something that needs to be practiced in everything we do. In our handling of money, the desire to do drugs, the way we treat others, studying for a school exam, coming to work daily on time, and the list goes on and on.

Now is the time for us to start controlling our own lives and stop allowing food or our emotions and desires to control us.

95 day journey till Easter ~~~~~ Days 90 to 88

Day 88       Jan 2, 2013       It’s me not the food that needs to behave

One thing I’ve learned over the years is the fact that it’s not the food that needs to be obedient. Too often we try to give the task of being obedient to the kind of food we eat. After all it should be the one who behaves as we do our part and eat all the “right” things, whole wheat, all natural, diet drinks, fat free, or whatever else. Needless to say if we eat more of those “right” foods than our body can burn up we are going to gain weight anyway. Once when I was on a fat free diet I figured I could eat whatever I wanted and as much as I wanted as long as it was “fat free.” Guess what? Yes you guessed it, I gained weight.

The food was being obedient but I wasn’t. On diets we’ve had success with often once we lose our weight and stop dieting we gain our weight back. Why is this? It’s frequently because we haven’t taught ourselves to be the one who obeys God’s rules for healthy eating by eating when we are hungry and stopping when we are satisfied.

It doesn’t matter what food we eat. We can eat a candy bar if our stomach is truly hungry and we stop when satisfied. However, it’s always smart to eat the food that is best for us nutrition wise such as vegetables and fresh food but don’t think it’s the one that needs to be obedient. Obedience to proper eating habits is our job. We are the ones who need to behave not the food.

Day 89          Jan 1, 2013     God’s Word In Action

A good task for anything we do is to keep God’s word in our heart. This is how I conquered my stress seizures over 20 years ago and this is how I can defeat my weight problem. Scriptures such as “I can do all things (lose weight included) thru Christ who gives me strength (Phil 4:13). God’s grace is sufficient (2 Cor 12:9) I don’t need food to complete me or my life. My body is a temple of God (1 Cor 6:19,20) I need to take care of it and use it to glorify God not disgrace Him by my choice of eating habits. Earlier in that same chapter in Corinthians it talks about how we may think all things are lawful for us but all things are not helpful and we shouldn’t allow ourselves to be under the power of any of it. It goes on to say food is for the stomach and the stomach for food but eventually God will destroy both.

The ice cream I thought I needed, the fulfillment lasted about as long as the ice cream bar did. Once it was gone it all was gone including the satisfaction. What I need to do is concentrate on the fact that what remains is my spiritual temple I’ve been assigned caretaker to. It is the thing that will last forever and it’s up to me to see to it that it is cared for properly. It doesn’t require ice cream, pie, cookies, or extra food servings. It requires care, nurturing, attention, and the proper feeding of spiritual food instead. It entails me to allow God’s word to be in action in all that I say, do, and eat.

Day 90    12-31-12   The Fight Against Frustration

In attempt to do anything in life whether it’s dieting, going to college, working, training horses, riding cows, building bridges, etc we will always run into some kind of frustration. Recently as I weighed myself to see if I had lost any weight the scale went up instead of down.

Instant frustration could be felt over the fact that all my hard work wasn’t paying off. At the rate I was going I might as well quit now instead of trying to go on. The same old tape recordings in my mind began to play once more, “this is the way it always is, and no matter how hard I try I just can’t seem to lose weight so why bother!”

At the risk of trying to lie to myself along with everyone else I truly wasn’t trying. My ratio of efforts was reflecting on the very scale I stood upon as I pointed my finger at it yelling “liar, liar!”

When we lie to ourselves we are only adding to our frustration instead of taking away from it. Frustration is grown on the root of stress and it needs dealt with properly like everything else. Yes, life has its frustrations but that is no excuse to yell and scream and point our fingers at everyone else without looking at what the true problem is.

Frustration has a way of setting us back but we don’t have to give ourselves permission to stay there and make matters worse. Its better we stand upright once again and keep moving forward stronger and better as we overcome each of life’s frustrations and setbacks one day at a time.

Day 91 until Easter~~~~~~Death to Self

Dec 12-30-12

When I think of the subject of “death-to-self” the hair on the back of my neck stands up and I get offensive. After all, I’m an adult and have been for several years I should not have to deny myself anything. I have a job I can pay for whatever it is I want. If I want a banana split I can get it, I don’t need mommy around anymore telling me what I can or cannot do.

Wrong!

The job of mom if you think about it is to do their job so well that they work their way out of a job. As the child grows up they are to take over where mom or dad left off and are able to care for themselves. One of the lessons to be learnt is the lesson of dying to one’s self. To be able to say “No” once in a while in order to maintain proper discipline and good choices.

Just because I can say “Yes” doesn’t make that the right answer. If I’m eating too much and I’m gaining weight I need to die to myself and the desires I have to eat in a greedy, glutton, selfish kind of way.

After doing this for a while I have found that I still manage to live, duh! It doesn’t kill me totally to say “no” to a cookie today because tomorrow I may be able to have one if I’m truly hungry and one cookie doesn’t turn into a jar full of cookies.

By nature we are selfish people and we need to learn the lesson of dying to ourselves. Learning quickly how to say “No” and to think of someone more than ourselves. Once again just because we “can” do something doesn’t make it right. We need to be living our lives in a manner that glorifies God and benefits us and those around us. Dying to one’s self doesn’t kill us, it causes us to grow in the right way and mature more and more into the person we need to be.

Growing beyond the size I am today into the size of clothes I should be requires death to self and the bad choices I’ve been making that got me to where I am today weight wise. It’s a choice, a discipline worth taking. In the long run it causes me to gain something much more than extra pounds. I gain maturity and satisfaction in Christ.
